1. Model a teaching session

Adjust the default example to your actual situation. These inputs are not published tutoring rates.

What does it need to charge?

…Modeled per-session price at selected margin, including the value of your own time
…Modeled session cost
…Full time including prep/travel
…Cash remaining per hour before paying yourself or income tax
…Residual above the labor allowance and other costs
…Hypothetical monthly revenue at entered session count, not a customer forecast

2. Build a 60-minute beginner lesson

Pick a maximum of three topics for a first appointment. Demonstrate once, then let the learner practice on their own device. Avoid taking over their accounts.

Before finishing: No credentials, PINs, payment details or personal account access are requested or retained. The learner keeps control of their phone. If a task involves health, banking, cybersecurity or suspected fraud, stop and refer to the relevant official provider.

    3. Start responsibly, without buying expensive equipment

First: Test a lesson on your own device or with a consenting adult you know, and verify that you can explain a task clearly. Next: Set a narrow scope (for example, 45–60 minutes of camera and video-call skills), a safe public or permissioned meeting place, a cancellation rule, and a transparent flat price. Then: Explore whether a library, community center, or adult-education setting welcomes an appropriate instructor. Never represent yourself as affiliated with Apple, Google or another brand without authorization.

Why someone might choose free lessons instead

Senior Planet from AARP offers free technology classes and learning opportunities for older adults. Libraries and community programs may have no-cost training too. Prospective instructors should understand that a paid service must add value through convenience, tailored practice, scheduling or accessibility rather than imply that free help does not exist. Senior Planet confirms its programs are free.

    Keep a firm safety boundary

Don’t request passwords, financial account access, medical portal access, remote control, SIM transfers or device repairs. The FTC warns that impersonating support and requesting access or sensitive information are common tactics in tech-support scams. For anything involving suspected fraud, direct the learner to a known official support channel, not an unfamiliar number from a pop-up. FTC consumer advice.

    Worked teaching example

A customer wants to learn to send a photo and make one video call. An appropriate beginner session might spend five minutes agreeing on goals, 20 minutes practicing photos, 20 minutes practicing the video call, ten minutes letting the learner repeat both tasks, and five minutes summarizing steps. The tutor should not store customer photos, import contact lists, or authenticate into accounts.

    Validate demand, then decide

Before buying printed materials or paid listings, talk to potential customers or organizations with permission. Ask what specific tasks people struggle with and whether they already have access to a free local class. Time actual travel and lesson preparation. If there is no willingness to pay, revise the offer or move on instead of spending savings on a broad “tech consulting” business.

    Common questions

Can I teach beginners without a computer-repair qualification?

Teaching basic device use is different from technical repair or regulated services. Skills, venue permissions, business registration, insurance and local rules still need to be considered. Never promise competency in a task you have not practiced.

Should I charge for lessons when free classes exist?

Only if customers independently value your availability or individualized assistance. Be clear about free options first. Avoid high-pressure claims about urgent technical problems.

Does the price calculator predict what customers will pay?

No. It calculates an illustrative amount to cover specified costs and a selected margin. It is not market research, evidence of customers, or guaranteed profit.
