SEASONAL SERVICE / FREE WORKED EXAMPLE

Pricing a first leaf-cleanup job without guessing

Before quoting a yard cleanup, estimate onsite time, travel, bags, disposal and your target margin. The illustrative values below are not market rates or actual job data.

Fictional job: 2.5 hours of work at an internal labor-cost allowance of $25/hour ($62.50) + travel and setup ($15) + 12 bags at $0.60 ($7.20) + disposal ($20) = $104.70 modeled cost.

For a 30% target gross margin, estimated quote = $104.70 ÷ 0.70 = $149.57, before any costs missing from this example. Actual travel, insurance, fuel, tax and disposal rules may materially change the quote.

Check the actual yard and disposal rules before promising service. A quoted customer price is not the same as an hourly wage or guaranteed profit. Wet leaves, tight access and repeat visits can change the time.

The optional download lets you edit work zones and costs, prepare customer quote output, compare repeat visits and export your records. Desktop browser recommended; ZIP access on phones varies. No guaranteed clients or earnings.

Pick around your circumstances, not someone else’s income screenshots.

The best initial option depends on transportation, mobility, digital comfort, access to customers and local permission rules. Some services require travel or liability insurance; others need exceptional privacy care. None are literally free to operate or appropriate for every beginner.

The first-week decision method

Make the service narrower before trying to make the business larger. A simple plan can keep a beginner from paying for ads, an expensive website, or unnecessary equipment before identifying a willing customer.

  1. Choose one offer from above that you could perform responsibly with your present skills and access.
  2. Write down who might want it, what the deliverable is, how long it actually takes, and what work you will decline.
  3. Check municipal registration, activity-specific permits, income and sales-tax responsibilities, and appropriate insurance or property access rules. Use the SBA’s free launch checklist.
  4. Calculate total travel, paid labor, supplies, overhead, insurance allowance and rework. Then test whether a buyer will accept your proposed price.
  5. Talk with a few relevant people in permissioned channels and listen for objections. Don’t buy bulk gear or run paid advertisements until there is some evidence of willingness to pay.
  6. Offer a tightly scoped trial only after you can perform it safely, legally and with the customer’s approval.
  7. Record actual time and costs, revise or stop. A service that is not viable locally is not a personal failure and should not absorb scarce savings.
