TAILORSCAN / DIGITAL COMMERCE FIELD GUIDE
How to sell a digital download without making support your second job.
Before you pay for a storefront, test the file, the checkout and the first customer experience. An instant download is only passive when the underlying work stays reliable.
For: creators, software makers, independent educators, designers and small teams selling PDFs, browser tools, templates, or digital kits. This guide covers delivery operations, not legal or tax compliance certification.
1. Start with what the buyer receives
Write a plain-language product manifest: title, exact file names and formats, device requirements, browser version expectations, whether an internet connection is needed, whether data are stored locally, the license scope, refund terms, and which kinds of support are included. If you sell a ZIP containing HTML and JavaScript, explain how to extract it, what file to open and whether the tool works on a phone. Do not call a desktop-only tool mobile-friendly just because the sales page works on mobile.
2. Test the full delivery sequence
- Visit the product page in a private browser session and confirm the product description and price.
- Use a controlled test checkout or authorized test order; do not treat it as an actual customer sale.
- Check the confirmation, sender identity, download email, working asset link, and fulfillment status.
- Download the exact public purchase asset and open it on at least one supported device.
- Check file integrity, links, print layout, sample data removal, privacy claims and error messages.
- Document where a buyer requests help, and how a broken delivery link is reissued.
Shopify’s Digital Products app currently supports files and hosted links, configurable download limits and automatic or manual delivery. Shopify cautions that hosted destination URLs are not monitored, so a moved or private destination may leave a customer with a nonworking link. This is a product-specific concern worth testing, regardless of platform.
3. Model the actual contribution margin
A hypothetical $12 download with $0.70 payment and per-order platform costs and $1.50 estimated support/refund reserve contributes $9.80 before monthly fixed costs, taxes and production labor. If fixed platform and app costs are $36 per month, the model needs four such orders just to cover those fixed costs, because 36 ÷ 9.80 = 3.67, rounded up. Replace all fictional inputs with your contract pricing and actual observed support effort. A creator averaging one customer-service email per order does not have zero fulfillment cost.
4. Compare platform models using your intended workload
Simple checkout link
Useful when you need one or two digital files, minimal brand customization and simple delivery. Check account control, platform fees, data portability and payout rules.
Full storefront
Useful for multiple products, categories, variants, search traffic and controlled presentation. Usually adds setup effort, fixed fees or ongoing maintenance.
Self-hosted ecommerce
Offers more infrastructure control, but security, plugin updates, uptime, checkout support and tax configuration become ongoing responsibilities.
5. Know what the buyer is licensed to do
Separate internal business use, redistribution, resale, modification, team seats and commercial use. If a template bundles third-party fonts, images or code, confirm that your distribution rights cover those assets. Put the license in the download and summarize critical terms on the purchase page. Avoid promising copyright protection merely because the file contains a watermark.
6. Design a low-support release process
Use a version number, changelog, compatible file formats, a tested example, a concise start-here document, known limitations, and a way to report reproducible errors. Maintain original builds and backups. Keep records of what purchasers were promised and how updates are distributed. When a tool is offline and no user data leaves the browser, say so only after validating the code and external dependencies.
7. A checklist to use before launching
Complete asset · sample or screenshot · compatible devices · license · version · tested print/export.
Correct price · approved payments · digital delivery · no accidental shipping charges · buyer instructions.
Offer positioning · truthful support terms · refund terms · fee model · clear contact route · accurate affiliate disclosure.
