Where Should You Sell a Digital Download? Shopify vs Payhip vs Gumroad vs Lemon Squeezy

Independent operator’s guide, updated October 15, 2026. The most expensive ecommerce mistake may be paying a monthly storefront bill before you know whether strangers will buy your first digital file. A low-price template, browser tool or printable can launch in several ways. Your best platform depends on actual buyer traffic, transaction costs, tax-handling responsibility, and whether you need a multi-product branded storefront.

Commercial relationships: TailorScan LLC operates its own digital-product store using Shopify and is an approved Shopify affiliate. As a Shopify affiliate, we may earn a commission if you sign up for an eligible paid Shopify plan through the clearly labeled referral link below. The ordinary links to vendor pricing documentation remain uncompensated. We have not performed controlled feature-by-feature tests of Payhip, Gumroad or Lemon Squeezy; their figures below come from the vendors’ public pricing pages. We also sell our own digital products, identified as TailorScan-owned.

Four ways to sell downloadable products

Platform Published starting structure When it fits Watch out for
Payhip Free $0/month plus 5% Payhip fee per transaction, plus payment processor charges Early validation, standalone downloads, minimal fixed overhead Do not confuse the platform’s 5% fee with the all-in transaction cost
Gumroad $0/month; 10% + $0.50 direct sale, with additional card processing according to its fee help; 30% marketplace-discovery sales Creators who value its checkout/marketplace and can accept the variable fees Marketplace orders carry a very different commission than direct traffic
Lemon Squeezy $0/month; standard ecommerce rate 5% + $0.50 per transaction, with potential additional fees Digital sellers considering merchant-of-record tax handling and billing capabilities Cross-border, PayPal, subscription, affiliate and other special fees can change totals
Shopify Basic $39/month paid monthly or $29/month paid annually, before apps and payment charges; advertised US online card rates from 2.9% + $0.30 Branded ecommerce storefront and product catalog with room for multiple channels Monthly platform cost continues even if you make zero sales; payment and app fees vary

Published pricing references, checked October 15, 2026: Payhip, Gumroad, Gumroad detailed fees, Lemon Squeezy, and Shopify. Promotional trials, existing-plan terms, countries, cards, taxes, apps and chargebacks can change your actual costs.

Worked example: one $39 digital download

For a simple comparison, assume 10 genuinely paid orders per month at $39 per order, no refunds, no taxes, no subscription upgrades and no optional apps. Gross order value is $390. The figures below are illustrative fee models, not current checkout quotations or realized profits.

  • Shopify Basic monthly: $39 platform fee plus an assumed 2.9% + $0.30 per order means roughly $53.31 in modeled platform and card fees before other expenses.
  • Payhip Free: 5% platform fee plus a separately assumed 2.9% + $0.30 card-processing example means roughly $33.81 before other expenses.
  • Gumroad direct: using published 10% + $0.50 platform fees and an illustrative additional 2.9% + $0.30 card charge gives approximately $58.31. Actual processing treatment and payment methods must be checked against the vendor’s full terms.
  • Lemon Squeezy: the standard 5% + $0.50 structure yields about $24.50 before any international, payout or special fees; do not assume this is final all-in settlement.

These are arithmetic illustrations, not assertions that all platforms provide equivalent fulfillment, support, merchant-of-record status, refund processing, compliance or storefront features. And revenue minus platform fees is not net business profit: marketing, support, creation time, hosting, operating subscriptions, refunds and other expenses remain.

How to choose without buying software you don’t need

  1. Start with a real problem: Who would pay for this file, and what time or error does it eliminate? If you cannot answer, a premium checkout platform won’t fix demand.
  2. Build a working deliverable: Test the ZIP, instructions, browser compatibility, license terms and support email. A download link is not evidence the file works for the buyer.
  3. Publish a free useful demonstration: Show a fictional input and output, label assumptions, and explain limitations. Avoid fabricated customer testimonials and income promises.
  4. Choose the smallest adequate platform: If you have zero orders, compare free-to-start choices before paying a fixed monthly fee. If you need broad catalog management, storefront customization or multichannel sales, calculate the value of Shopify’s added capabilities.
  5. Track the entire sale: Distinguish test purchases from genuine customer orders, payment capture from bank payout, and owner deposits from sales. Reconcile processor fees and refunds.
  6. Earn traffic before scaling: Original tutorials, specific case studies, transparent product examples and useful comparisons are stronger than empty keyword pages or affiliate banners.

A real operator’s lesson: storefront setup is not validation

TailorScan LLC has built a live Shopify digital-download storefront, free educational tools and downloadable browser applications for service businesses. That verifies publishing and technical delivery configuration; it does not prove external sales. We track actual purchases separately from internal testing and refuse to present test purchases as revenue. We have chosen to work on the buyer funnel before adding more paid subscriptions.

For example, our Commercial Cleaning Bid Studio 2 is a TailorScan-owned $39 browser-based tool delivered by downloadable ZIP. It is designed for desktop use and is not a cloud team management platform. The separate commercial cleaning software comparison explains when a free spreadsheet or a recurring cloud system may fit better. These examples illustrate product positioning, not sales success.

When Shopify specifically makes sense

Shopify is worth evaluating when a merchant needs a branded storefront, a growing product catalog, ecommerce administration or additional selling channels and expects those capabilities to justify fixed subscription costs. A $39 single-file business with unknown demand does not necessarily need that infrastructure immediately. Shopify publishes current plan pricing and payment terms on its own site, and merchants should check account-specific offers before committing.

Frequently asked questions

What if I have no audience?

Spend more time demonstrating the product and reaching relevant problem-solving communities. Compare free-to-start checkout platforms until sales or meaningful buyer interest justify fixed monthly expenses. Do not treat generic traffic as paying customers.

Are the fee examples guaranteed?

No. Published pricing changes, transaction characteristics differ, and payment methods, tax treatment, country, refunds and special charges matter. Enter your own verified assumptions in the free calculator.

Can a digital download generate passive income?

File delivery can be automated, but discovery, support, software maintenance, returns and accounting still need attention. The correct target is income that requires little repeated fulfillment, not a promise of effortless profit.

What about collecting affiliate commissions?

An affiliate link is a separate financial arrangement from selling your own downloadable files. Only use merchant-issued approved referral URLs, keep records of actual commissions and payouts, and put clear advertising disclosures next to compensated recommendations. Read TailorScan’s editorial and affiliate disclosures.
